Dr.\u00a0Thomas Karikari, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized neuroscientist whose work focuses on the discovery, validation, and clinical implementation of\u00a0biofluid biomarkers for Alzheimer\u2019s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. He serves as an\u00a0Assistant Professor (tenure stream)\u00a0in the\u00a0Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, where he also holds several key leadership positions.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Karikari is the\u00a0Founding Director of the Biofluid Biomarker Laboratory, as well as the\u00a0Mass Spectrometry Program\u00a0and the\u00a0Single Molecule Analytics Program\u00a0within the Department of Psychiatry. He also serves as\u00a0Director of the Biomarker and Neurogenetics Core\u00a0of the\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Research Center\u00a0and holds the title of\u00a0Endowed Faculty Fellow in Peripheral Biomarkers for Brain Diseases. In addition, he leads\u00a0Research Partnerships and Strategic Alliances\u00a0within the Department of Psychiatry and serves as an\u00a0Assistant Professor\u00a0at the\u00a0Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)\u00a0at the University of Pittsburgh. Internationally, he is an\u00a0Adjunct Assistant Professor\u00a0in the\u00a0Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry\u00a0at the\u00a0Sahlgrenska\u00a0Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At the national level, Dr. Karikari leads the\u00a0Fluid Biomarker Core\u00a0of the\u00a0National Institute on Aging (NIA) Alzheimer\u2019s Program Project Grant, where his research integrates fundamental and translational neuroscience with a strong focus on clinical applications. His work has contributed\u00a0substantially to\u00a0the global advancement of blood-based and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Karikari Laboratory is dedicated to understanding the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders, with a particular focus on developing biomarkers to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic evaluation. Leveraging advanced mass spectrometry and immunoassay technologies, his team has pioneered several landmark innovations, including:\u00a0<\/p>\n
These biomarkers have undergone extensive validation across diverse clinical and research cohorts and are now routinely used in\u00a0therapeutic trials,\u00a0diagnostic workflows, and\u00a0prognostic evaluations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Beyond his scientific innovations, Dr. Karikari has extensive experience in\u00a0clinical chemistry,\u00a0laboratory management,\u00a0standardization of preanalytical and analytical protocols, and the\u00a0design of simplified, resource-efficient blood collection procedures\u00a0suitable for both\u00a0community-based and low-resource research settings. His laboratory oversees large-scale biomarker initiatives involving the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data from thousands of biospecimens.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Dr. Karikari has also been privileged to contribute to several\u00a0high-impact international committees\u00a0that shape global biomarker research and clinical practice, including the\u00a0World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) Preferred Product Characteristics for Blood Biomarkers\u00a0and the\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s Association\u2019s working group\u00a0developing\u00a0clinical guidelines for blood biomarker\u00a0utilization.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In recognition of his groundbreaking work and leadership in Alzheimer\u2019s biomarker research, Dr. Karikari received two of the University of Pittsburgh\u2019s highest honors in\u00a02025: the\u00a0Senior Vice Chancellor\u2019s Research Seminar Award\u00a0and the\u00a0Chancellor\u2019s Distinguished Research Award.
